Do you know what a round ‘To It’ is? Picture a round aluminum coin a bit bigger than a silver dollar with the words ‘To It’ stamped on both sides. We used to hand them out to employees or our kids when they would procrastinate over doing a job saying, ” I’ll get around to it.”
That is kind of like people, who at the start of a new year, resolve to begin an exercise routine – then, before they know it, summer in all its Yang glory is upon them. A lot of us power on to rise to the seasonal occasion often with the effect of sore muscles, strained tendons and more, not to mention the mental frustration of not having kept the pact we made with ourselves back in January.
What’s a soul to do? One of my health care providers used to say, ” You can never have too much information – it’s what you do with it that counts. So, let’s see what you can do with the information that follows.
Why exercise, anyway? The proof of the pudding is that by doing so we support longevity but even more important is that we live better and healthier while we live longer – quality with quantity.
It all starts with the breath. Deep breathing is important from the time we are born belting out that first cry. Your lungs mature by the time you are about 20–25 years old. After about the age of 35, it is normal for your lung function to decline gradually as you age. This can make breathing slightly more difficult as you get older – a good reason to find a daily form of aerobic exercise you are comfortable doing to help keep your lung volume at a healthy capacity.
Lung volume is just one of the measures of longevity. According to a Zoe health and nutrition podcast I listened to scientists say that leg strength and hand grip strength are the two other significant measures. I have attended a few Bowen (physical) therapy classes where the master teachers took the hand of each participant to give and receive a handshake. A handshake can tell a lot. This was not just about grip strength – think quality as well as quantity.
Recently, I watched a PBS documentary called ‘First Steps’ about infant animals and their need to learn to quickly move forward into their world in order to survive – in the stories of the baby elephants and kangaroos, it was about leg muscle strength and coordination to keep up with mom and the others. For us humans our leg strength is about moving forward in life with balance and conviction, a positive sense of self.
We humans fall down and get up – most of the time with resilience. But what about these various mishaps, like: twisting your ankle (while scenic mountain hiking); wrenching your back (leaping to whack the volleyball); being tumbled in a monster wave; an impact to an eye (from a tennis ball); fracturing an arm (while rock climbing). All of these are real people with injuries who were helped with homeopathic medicines over the past year.
*An important note is to seek medical attention when the injury warrants.
Pain and injury and what to do about it when homeopathic medicines are within reach. Some people think of using homeopathic medicines with just pain relief in mind without realizing one of the more important things about Homeopathy is that the medicines, when matched to your symptoms (called the Law of Similars), actually go to work with your energy and immune system to stimulate your body heal better, faster and deeper than if the medicine is not used.
For instance, a broken bone will heal but with the best homeopathic medicine the bone knits together with more strength and more quickly. My 3-year-old neighbor fell and broke his arm. His mom administered Arnica 30 c a few times. Arnica is known to resolve shock from injury along with the pain and swelling from blunt trauma and bruising and, in addition, helps heal the injury.
After Arnica he did not complain of pain nor was swelling an issue, but a follow up Xray showed slow healing. I recommended daily low potency doses over one week of Symphytum 6 c, a medicine known for stimulating the person’s vital force in the healing of their fractured bone. His bone showed excellent healing at the next Xray. Symphytum, also known as ‘knit bone’ stimulates the union of fractured bone. Do not use it until the bone has been properly set.
Any other mishaps or injuries you might experience during your strength building exercise routine or while out and about participating in aerobic activities can be helped in a similar way with homeopathic medicines.
Ankle strains/sprains: Arnica 30 c for swelling, pain is first choice. Follow up with Ledum 30 c if ankle is better from cold compresses or feels cold, if more help is needed after Arnica. Or you might need Rhus tox 30 c if there is stiffness on first use which gets better after you limber up.
Muscle strain: Arnica 30 c for pain and swelling. A few medicines might be needed for follow up: Bryonia 30 c, if the pain is much worse from any movement where you prefer to find the most comfortable position and stay there; Rhus tox 30c, if the pain is worse on initial movement but then better as you limber up, but then worse again if you do too much.
Blow to the head or concussion: Arnica 30c or 200c for shock, contusion, swelling and blunt trauma. Hypericum 30c if Arnica stops helping and if you feel sad/depressed with a sensation of floating. *Seek medical attention when needed – homeopathic medicines can be given while waiting.
The child who was tumbled in a monster wave was disoriented, had head / neck pain along with back pain, along with skin abrasions from the sand. I recognized that he was in shock. Since I carry a few first aid medicines with me to the beach, I quickly gave him a pellet of Arnica 30 c to dissolve on his tongue. If I’d had Arnica 200 c with me, I would have used that potency as it works more deeply for more extensive injuries.
His disorientation and shivering immediately were lessened to the point that he was able to focus on his head and neck pain. Within 10 minutes I repeated Arnica 30 c. He responded well to a few more repetitions over an hour or two until his head and neck pain stabilized. The following day he took it easy and was helped some more with another two doses of Arnica 30 c while we sought medical evaluation.
I also gave him Calendula ointment for his skin abrasions. This topical ointment or cream is prepared from homeopathic Calendula 1 x dilution in homeopathic pharmacies. You can buy it in health food stores, pharmacies and grocery stores. Calendula ointment or cream has natural antibiotic properties and works with your vital force and immune system to ease pain and speed healing, without antibiotic creams and topical hydrocortisone.
The tennis player received a very painful blow to his eye. He knew enough to lie still while his partner found help. An exam showed no abrasions or fractures. His partner who knew about homeopathic medicines gave Arnica 200 c and then called to see if anything else should be given. Arnica is very good for healing injuries from blunt trauma to the eye even when there is hemorrhage. But a most excellent medicine for blows to the eye is Symphytum, in a 30c. Homeopathic Symphytum resolves hemorrhage, reduces internal pressure and swelling, preventing loss of vision and other sequelae.
The tennis player was delivered a tube of Symphytum 30 c and took it on the spot with quick relief of considerable pain. The ophthalmologist was amazed at the healing that had occurred and wanted to know if he had done anything in addition to doctor’s instructions. He was interested to learn about homeopathy and Symphytum. (Note that the same medicine has multiple uses, making homeopathy such a practical useful system of medicine.)
When administering a homeopathic medicine, you need only to take one 30 c or 200 c pellet to dissolve on your tongue. If you feel better do not repeat the medicine unless symptoms return. (In more intense acute injuries, you may need to repeat every several minutes at first, decreasing the frequency of repetition as you feel better.) If the medicine does not improve your symptoms or works for a short time and then no longer helps, pay attention to what makes you feel better, or worse, and using this information choose another medicine that more closely matches your symptoms.

There are many good books about how to use homeopathy for simple first aid / injuries and simple acute illnesses. Here is one I cut my teeth on by Dana Ullman and Steven Cummings- Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicines.
Another gem of a book I would not be without is called simply, FIRST AID HOMEOPATHY in ACCIDENTS and AILMENTS by Dr. D. M. Gibson. It is an 80-page compact all-inclusive light weight book so easy to travel with. You can still buy it used on Amazon.
