We just had a great turn out at our October 4th meeting – The First Four Remedies for Cold and Flu ( Aconite, Belladonna, Ferrum phosphoricum, Gelsemium ) presented by Mitchel Shapiro, PA and homeopathic practitioner. I hope you were there learning about which one to try should the opportunity arise – to see first hand how Homeopathy stimulates healing. It is, at once, an awesome and humbling experience.
You can click on this link to see Mitch’s handout for the remedies we learned about. Likewise, there are two self -help books we recommend. One is Homeopathic Medicine at Home: Natural Remedies for Everyday Ailments and Minor Injuries, Maesimund Panos, M.D. and another is Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicines, Stephen Cummings, M.D. and Dana Ullman. We would like you to bring one or the other to Homeopathy Delaware meetings – as a group we will be learning to solve acute cases. Remember, we want to help you learn to use Homeopathy at home !
Have you noticed how much earlier this year, and more aggressively, we are being bombarded with warnings about flu and how we must get a flu shot ? The fear mongering is pervasive.
Influenzinum There is a ‘homeopathic alternative’ to the flu shot. But be informed that ‘Influenzinum’ may not afford prophylaxis for the flu. Why ? Because the diluted and potentized remedy is made from the same strains that the year’s flu vaccine is made from and choosing the year’s strains is little more than a guessing game.
The best strategy to staying healthy is being smart about day to day living – hand washing, asleep by 11PM with 7- 9 hours of it; avoiding sugary, processed food; a moderate amount of sun, fresh air and exercise; good communication with those we live and work amongst.
Herbals There are a few non-homeopathic herbal preparations that can be supportive and safe for those who are not sensitive to the herb. If you feel as if you are becoming ill with a cold / flu you could benefit from one or more of them as they can support your immune system. A few are – Echinacea, Astragalus, Umckaloabo, Elderberry.
Oscillococcinum If you become ill with a seasonal virus and if you are pretty sure it is influenza, you may benefit from taking a homeopathic over the counter remedy called Oscillococcinum. This remedy can help if you have influenza but may not help much or at all if you have an upper respiratory virus. If you have, primarily, a feeling of malaise accompanied with over-all body aches, probably with fever, you could benefit. Oscillococcinum needs to be taken within the first 24 – 36 hours of symptoms. After that it is not very effective.
Even so, the most person – specific way to use homeopathy to heal when you have the flu is to note symptoms and use one of the cold / flu remedies that is most similar to your individual symptoms.
